Term Main definition
Zero Gas
In gas detection, a gas with a contaminant concentration below an instrument
Volatile Organic Compound
An organic compound with a high vapour pressure at room temperature, which causes large numbers of molecules to evaporate or sublimate. VOC's are detectable with colorimetric gas sampling tubes in various ranges, with PID instrument for exposure purposes, and with LEL sensors for explosion hazard prevention purposes.
Uniphos
A relatively new brand of colorimetric gas sampling tubes that has earned itself a place in the market by great value for money and acquisition of rivals.
TWA
Time Weighted Average: The average concentration over a period of usually 8 hours to which workers can be exposed without known negative health effects.
Training
To offer training courses about all aspects and procedures of gas detection.
Toxic
Characteristic of a material that causes injury, harm and ultimately death, when contacted, inhaled, or ingested.
Support
To give assistance, to be stand by when problems arise, to maintain instruments, to repair instruments, to hold resources available for the correct and safe use of the instrument, to offer firmware updates, software and accessories that are ideally suited to the instrument.
STEL
Short Term Exposure Limit: the average concentration over a period of usually 15 minutes to which workers can be exposed without known negative health effects.
Stationary Gas Detection
Gas detection that is mounted to a building, usually wired to a central controller in a control room for continuous monitoring and switching equipment.
Specialist
A person or organisation who concentrates primarily on a particular subject or activity; a person or organisation highly skilled in a specific and restricted field.
Span Gas
See Calibration Gas
Single Gas Detection
A usually small device that contains a sensor for a single target gas. While a single gas detection device can be an alarm-only instrument, they can also be fully fledged gas detectors, including complete datalogging and communicating instruments with capabilities of transferring readings in real-time via a built-in modem. Of course, which single gas detection solution is best for you depends on a number of questions, which we are only too happy to pose.
Shutdown management
Shutdown maintenance is maintenance that can only be performed while the plant is not in use. Shutdowns involve the prolongued disuse of the plant or equipment, which is very costly. That is why shutdowns are managed extensively, to minimize the shutdown time to the shortest period possible.
Semi-Fixed Gas Detection
A solution that aims to ensure safety during a limited period by using (semi)portable instruments and predominantly wireless communication. Can be used during plant stops and turnarounds, environmental incidents, events in public venues, etc.
Safety
The condition of being protected from - or unlikely to cause - danger, risk, or injury. Gas detection equipment is safety equipment because it protects its users against danger and injury, while it also protects the company in which it is used through early notification of unsafe situations.
Rental
A short-term contract by which 7Solutions conveys the use of its gas detectors to its customer for a specified term in return for a one time payment upon returning of the rented instruments. 7Solutions offers rental, financial and operational lease solutions for almost any gas detection instrument imaginable. Usually, the term rental is used for short term contracts, while lease is used for terms that span the economic life of gas detection instruments.
Pump
In gas detection, a device that draws an air sample into a detecting agent (colorimetic gas sampling tube or gas detector). Colorimetric gas sampling tubes require a pump, manual or electronic, to draw a sample through them. For electronic gas detectors, pumps can be integrated, clip-on or hand aspirators. Gas detectors with an integrated pump are suitable to sample confined spaces for gas hazards through a sampling hose. Photo Ionisation Detectors (PID) should always be equipped with a pump. A pump generally shortens the response time to gas hazards, but also consume electricity, shortening the battery life.
Prevention
The action of stopping something from happening or arising. Gas detection can be seen as a preventive measure, in that correctly used gas detection solutions prevent injury, death and damage to process and property. The preferred method of gas detection is very much dependant on the risk that should be mitigated. 7Solutions can advise on the best preventive measures regarding any risk.
Portable Gas Detection
Any gas detection solution that can be carried single handedly; usually, electronic gas detection monitors that can be held or worn on its user's clothing, belt or around its user's neck through clips and holsters.
Poisoning
What happens when a poison is ingested, injected, absorbed or inhaled. In gas detection, the term refers to rendering a sensor useless by inhibiting its detection principle, without causing a sensor fault. Most sensors can be poisoned by a too high concentration of its target substance. Catalytic Bead LEL sensors are susceptible to poisoning through a too high concentration of combustible gas (e.g. by holding an extinguished lighter to it) and silicons, which coat the catalyst beads, preventing the combusting reaction.

Information

7Solutions has its own service and maintenance department where we can service any gas detection instrument, no matter what brand or age.
